So often, over many other great qualities or achievements, we see women celebrated for their weight loss ‘success’ or image
‘transformation’. The image of how we see this may have changed over time, but the message we are told & sold remains the same.
Food is associated with shame. Clothing sizes, salads and scales seem to conjure a sense of dread.

Frustrated with society’s constant reframing of this age-old, surface level story of shame and success,
I placed myself within the pages of a pile of 70’s and 80's 'Slimming' magazines, following the often-ridiculous exercise routines and diets.

By picking apart and reassembling the adverts and images, I use the outdated language,
advertising and somewhat nostalgic material to laugh at, unpick and question these ideologies;
why is ‘slimness’ still our great pursuit?
